Madonna Will “Never Forget” Meeting Son David

Her adoption of son David Banda took two years to complete, but if Madonna had had her way, he wouldn’t have been the only child she took in from Malawi.

“I’ll never forget meeting my son, David. If I could, I would have adopted 10 more children,” she tells Parade.com. “There’s just so many that need parents and one’s more beautiful and lovely than the next.”

The superstar exposes the plight of Malawians in her new documentary, I Am Because We Are, which she made at the behest of a resident who wanted Madonna to share her people’s story with the world.

“I was approached by a woman who lived there who said, ‘Look, you have children; you’re a mother; you write children’s books; you donate money to children’s charities, so we know that you care. There’s a state of emergency going on here, over a million children orphaned by AIDS. People pay attention to what you do and what you say, so could you please help?’” Madonna recalls. “I just thought, ‘How can I say no?’”

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festivals in May, one of the singer’s many spring releases. Her eleventh studio album, Hard Candy, hit stores and featured collaborations with Justin Timberlake and Kanye West.

“I like to work with people who have strong opinions,” the 49-year-old says. “Justin, Timbaland and Kanye — they are all pretty much superstars in their own right and have a very strong sense of what they like and what they want — but so do I. So it was like many forces meeting all together in a room and it was good give and take. There was a lot of chemistry.”

Dad: Amy Winehouse Responding to Treatment

Amy Winehouse, who has been hospitalized and undergoing tests after collapsing, is suffering the early stages of emphysema, her father says – later adding, “She’s responding brilliantly to treatment.”

“With smoking the crack cocaine and the cigarettes her lungs are all gunked up,” Mitch Winehouse tells Britain’s Sunday Mirror. “There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She’s got 70 percent lung capacity.”

The troubled singer, 24, was rushed to the hospital June 16 after fainting in her London home. Tests so far have ruled out tuberculosis, but her father says his daughter has serious health problems.

“When we got to the hospital a room was ready,” Mitch Winehouse tells the newspaper. “Several doctors came in and checked to make sure she didn’t need any emergency treatment. They put her on a drip straight away because she was dehydrated. She said, ‘Don’t worry about me, dad. I know I’ve got to stop taking drugs now.’”

Winehouse had been awake for 48 hours before going to the hospital, her father says. After she was admitted, she “curled up in bed” and slept for three straight days, he says.

“She’s got emphysema,” he says. “It’s in its early stages, but had it gone on for another month they painted a very vivid picture of her sitting there like an old person with a mask on her face struggling to breathe.”

Amy Aware of Condition
Speaking on BBC Radio 1 Monday, the elder Winehouse clarified and amplified some of his earlier remarks. He said, “Amy really hasn’t got emphysema. There’s traces of emphysema. Obviously, if she doesn’t quit smoking it’s gonna get worse – as with everybody else.”

He said his daughter understands her condition. In terms of treatment, he said, “She’s smothered in nicotine patches. She’s responding brilliantly to treatment. She’s actually flourishing.”

He added, “She really wants to do the gigs at the weekend, and with the doctors’ permission – and they’ve given that permission – she’s gonna perform.”

Dr. Keith Prowse, chairman of the British Lung Foundation, said Winehouse is very young to have developed the condition and that genetics are likely playing a role.

“Emphysema is extremely common but it generally affects middle-aged and elderly people,” said Prowse, the British Press Association reports. “Smoking is the commonest cause, and it’s basically destruction of the lungs so that oxygen cannot get into them.”

Ashley Dupré Speaks Out for First Time

Ashley Dupré is speaking out for the first time since the New York prostitution scandal, paying tribute to her supporters and telling her critics that they only make her stronger.

“Thank you all so much for taking the time to send me a bit of strength and inspiration via e-mail or comment,” Dupré writes on her MySpace blog, in which she calls her mood “Thankful.” “Your words have touched me, and I thank you for that … with all my heart, I love you guys!!! :)

The 23-year-old call girl who played a major role in bringing down Gov. Eliot Spitzer had been nearly invisible since March 12, when she was identified.

But over the weekend the aspiring singer responded to the many people who left supportive messages on her account.

Dupré also left a comment for her critics: “And to all the not so kind words … I love you too, because it makes me push myself and want it even more. ‘Hard times don’t last … only strong people.’”

Since the scandal broke, Dupré – born Ashley Youmans in 1985 – has been spending some of her time trying to escape the controversy by hanging out with her mother and getting spa treatments.

In April, she filed a $10-million lawsuit against Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis, claiming that the company was exploiting nude images of her from when she was 17.
