Kanye West appeared close to tears as he apologised to singer Taylor Swift on American television last night after interrupting her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The rapper, who stormed on stage and grabbed the microphone from the 19-year-old award-winner, said he was sorry for being ‘rude’.

He posted an apology to the country star on his blog and followed up by telling told Jay Leno he wanted to say sorry to Swift in person.
U.S. television viewers were shocked by his antics at Sunday night’s awards – beforehand he was seen swigging cognac from a bottle on the red carpet.
West told Leno he was planning to take a break from the music industry and to assess his behaviour, which he partly sought to excuse with the recent death of his mother Donda.
It was an apparently impromptu appearance on the show.
As the host introduced his guest, he said: ‘This really wasn’t planned but Kanye wanted to talk, so please welcome Kanye West.’
