Emotions running high: Cheryl Cole is said to have burst into tears during her Mount Kilimanjaro trek yesterday after learning of her husband Ashley’s arrest
She was struck down with altitude sickness yesterday as the gruelling effects of her philanthropic Mount Kilimanjaro climb finally took a toll.
But Cheryl Cole’s day went from bad to worse after learning of her husband’s drunken arrest on a long night out back home.
The Girls Aloud singer is said to have burst into tears after news of the drama reached her in Tanzania, Africa, where she is five days in on a fundraising climb for Comic Relief.
‘She was very worried about what was going on at home. It’s the last thing she needed when she has to have all her mental strength to get through the next few days,’ an expedition crew member is quoted as saying in the Daily Star.
‘She was really low in the morning but the rest of the team tried to cheer her up.’
Sources said Ashley Cole, 28, repeatedly swore at a photographer then started abusing police after emerging from the Collection nightclub in Brompton Road, South Kensington, in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The photographer, who works for The Sun, had allegedly taken a snap of the £82,000 a week star talking to a blonde woman.
The newspaper claimed today that the left back had been mingling with a female clubber wearing a blue mini-dress.
Cole is said to have flown into a fury after learning of the photographer’s presence and his personal security team confiscated the camera.
After the Chelsea star refused to tone down his language during a subsequent conversation with police, he was handcuffed and taken away to sober up.
He spent three hours in a custody suite and was issued with an £80 fixed penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly and allowed to go home.
He is said to have been fined around £160,000, two weeks’ wages, by Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink, and there is speculation he will be dropped from the squad for tomorrow’s FA Cup tie at Coventry.
