Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden and Paris Hilton Hilton’s erstwhile best friend Nicole Richie have hit out at paparazzi for scaring their toddler daughter Harlow.
The young family were apparently mobbed by paps “acting like animales” at Miami Airport when they were trying to return home to Los Angeles, with Joel saying that his little girl was left “scared and confused.”
Posting on his Twitter account, he said: “These guys were sticking flashes in her face and bumping in to us and yelling. The most unneccessary force i’ve ever seen. It was the first time i’ve ever seen my child scared. Not cool for any parent to see. At least in LA they gave us some space.” Read the rest of this entry »
Joel Madden, rocking 6-month-old daughter Harlow to sleep in his arms while waiting to board his flight back to L.A. from Dallas with Nicole Richie. “Nicole was smiling and literally skipped over to Joel, and he handed Harlow to her,” says an onlooker. “They looked like an adorable family.” When it was time to take off, the happy family – plus a younger, tattooed guy and an older blonde female companion – took their seats in first class. “The baby was wide eyed, watching everyone walk onto the plane.”
“We go out like once a week,” Joel Madden told people at the opening of SugarFish sushi restaurant in Marina del Rey on Monday night. “We take a night to ourselves once a week.”
The couple also trade off baby duties. “I’ll stay home with the baby one night and then she’ll do the same – we do that a lot,” says Madden.
While Richie readily admits her life now revolves around baby Harlow, she and Madden still hit some of their favorite spots together.
“On our nights off we always go to Nozawa” sushi in Studio City, adds Richie, “so it was really special to be able to come here tonight.”
Joel Madden, sporting a colorful Malcolm X T-shirt, takes to the streets of West Hollywood, Calif., on Tuesday.
“Joel Madden” whisked girlfriend “Nicole Richie” and their three-and-a-half-month-old daughter Harlow to the California desert this weekend for a surprise family vacation, the Good Charlotte singer tells people.
The Richie-Madden clan headed to the Palm Springs area for the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, a three-day event headlined by performers including Prince, Jack Johnson and Roger Waters.
“[Nicole] hasn’t been able to do a whole lot over the year, so we’re having a little family trip,” Madden told people at the BPM Hpnotiq Smurf House, where he DJ’d a festival pre-party Saturday afternoon.
“I [rented] a house and surprised Nicole with a weekend trip because she likes Coachella. She was like, ‘I really want to go!’ So I surprised her. We brought the baby.”
And their activity? “Hanging by the pool.”
While Madden, 29, spun music for party guests including Dave Annable and Taryn Manning, a smiling, relaxed Richie, 26, chatted with friends about her daughter, who was being looked after at their nearby rental home.
Benji and Paris, Too
Meanwhile, Joel’s twin brother Benji Madden and his girlfriend Paris Hilton, who last week celebrated their relationship’s two-month anniversary, were also in town for the music festival.
So which couple will make it to the altar first? “We’re the family with the baby so I think probably us, but who knows,” says Joel – who remained mum on his and Richie’s wedding plans.
It’s like another baby!” Joel told people of the eight-months-in-the-making store off L.A.’s famous Melrose Avenue. “We’re going to carry DCMA’s line [including] baby stuff, the jewelry – it’s my favorite – and the collaboration T-shirts.” Adds Benji: “We come from a small town, and not very much, and to be doing this – it’s definitely a dream come true.”
Richie and Hilton helped their significant others entertain guests including Pete Wentz, Nicky Hilton and David Katzenberg, the Hills’ Audrina Patridge and Christina Milian, who also spent time at sponsor RCause.org’s booth, a new organization that supports charities including the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation.
“It’s so cool to see this come to life because this has been Joel’s dream for a very long time,” Richie, in a vintage Jil Stuart gown, tells people. “When I was pregnant I would always wear Joel’s DCMA T-shirts, but now I’m excited to wear the girls’ stuff. And Harlow wears custom DCMA.”
So where was 9-week-old Harlow on her dad’s big night? “My mom’s with her,” said Richie. “It’s fun, but it’s bittersweet because I don’t like to leave her. And I always wonder, ‘What is she doing?’ [I’ve checked in] twice so far – and I’ve only been gone an hour! But this is my adult night so I’m excited to see what the night brings.”
Although the couple ended up heading home instead of joining Benji, the Hilton sisters, Katzenberg and Patridge at a private afterparty at Hollywood club Central, nursing mom Richie was prepared in case the night stretched on. “[My breast pump] is in the car. And we have a converter because there’s no car charger, so that way I can plug it right in at 10 o’clock!” she said.
Next up for the Richie-Madden clan: saying goodbye as Good Charlotte kicks off a four-week South African and European tour next week. Joel says he plans to stay in touch with his family via online video links so he doesn’t miss a milestone.
