Swayze had said that he opted not to use painkillers while making the programme because he was concerned it would have taken the edge off his performance.

article-1213Dirty Dancing co-star Jennifer Grey led tributes today, saying: ‘When I think of him, I think of being in his arms when we were kids, dancing, practising the lift in the freezing lake, having a blast doing this tiny little movie we thought no one would ever see.’

Grey, 49, said Swayze – who played Johnny Castle in the flick – was a ‘real cowboy with a tender heart’.

She added in a statement: ‘It was not surprising to me that the war he waged on his cancer was so courageous and dignified.

Patrick Swayze is a shadow of his former self as cancer takes its toll

Frail: Actor Patrick Swayze was seen in Los Angeles looking startlingly frail, having lost weight and his hair as cancer takes its toll on the Ghost star

A rail thin Swayze, now virtually bald having lost his hair as a result of treatment, looked a shadow of his former self during an outing in Los Angeles.

With his clothes hanging from his reduced frame, the actor was barely recognisable as he walked to his car.

The 56-year-old edged along the roadside, gripping hold of a nearby post for support as his brother Don waited in a car park to take him to an appointment.

US magazine The National Enquirer said the Dirty Dancing star’s weight had dropped to just 7st 5lbs (47.6 kilos).

However friend and actress Whoopi Goldberg said: ‘You know what, he’s doing what everybody else is doing, he’s taking it one day at a time.

‘He does not have an expiration date on his backside – none of us do we just know at some point it’s going to happen and that’s how he’s looking at it,’ she added. Read the rest of this entry »

Patrick Swayze’s Happy – and Healthy – Birthday

It was a happy – and healthy – 56th birthday Monday for Patrick Swayze, who celebrated on the Chicago set of his A&E series, The Beast.

The Dirty Dancing actor, who revealed in March that he is battling pancreatic cancer, filmed scenes in Chicago’s Millenium Park beginning early Monday morning and throughout the day, surrounded by fans who came out to wish him a happy birthday.

When lunchtime rolled around, Swayze and wife Lisa Niemi enjoyed a birthday lunch at his trailer. The crew, which had decorated his trailer for the occasion, presented him with a birthday cake.

But that wasn’t the only surprise of the day. When Swayze returned to the set after lunch, he was greeted by crew members wearing matching black shirts with white letters saying “Crazy for Swayze,” with a picture of the actor.

The crew surrounded him and sang “Happy Birthday” to the actor, who was all smiles.

The actor has remained in good spirits during his cancer treatment. Last month, he told photographers and fans, “I’m a miracle, dude … I don’t know why.”

Patrick Swayze Calls His Recovery a ‘Miracle’

In the midst of fighting cancer, Patrick Swayze is looking like his old self again – healthy, happy and hot.

“I’m a miracle dude … I don’t know why,” he told photographers and fans as he left Los Angeles Airport on Sunday afternoon.

The actor, 55, also told the crowd he was flying to Chicago, where he’s filming his new TV series for A&E, The Beast.

In March, after Swayze announced he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he began chemotherapy.

In April, the actor and his wife, Lisa, released a statement saying they were “thrilled” with his response to treatment.

“We can’t help but feel that all the prayers, meditations and good thoughts sent his way by everyone has made a difference. Thank you!” the couple said.

Ever the optimist, Swayze continued his daily routine while undergoing treatment – stepping out to a Lakers game in May and traveling with his wife.

Patrick Swayze to Start Filming New TV Series

Patrick Swayze is bouncing back: The actor’s television project has just been greenlighted by A&E and will start filming this summer.

Swayze, who says he has been responding well to treatment for pancreatic cancer, is set to star in the A&E drama The Beast alongside Aussie actor and former Tarzan star Travis Fimmel.

“I have searched for quite a long time to find a character that is this multi-layered, unpredictable and downright entertaining, as well as a project this current and cutting edged,” Swayze, 55, said in a statement from the network.

In the series, the actor has a starring role playing veteran FBI agent Charles Barker, who is assigned to teach his rookie partner (Fimmel) his eccentric undercover crime-solving methods while secretly being investigated by an Internal Affairs team. Production on the show begins this summer and will film on location in Chicago, with a scheduled premiere date of early 2009.

“Chicago is an amazing, untapped city. I can’t wait to get to work on this,” said Swayze.

The actor is currently undergoing care at Stanford University Medical Center and will continue his course of treatment during filming. The original pilot for the A&E series was shot last December, just three months before the actor revealed his cancer diagnosis.

Recently Swayze updated people on his condition and showed no signs of slowing down, traveling with wife Lisa to Reno and attending a Los Angeles Lakers game.
